Traveler slammed for hotel complaint amid cartel violence in Mexico
by EMILY LEFROY, US CHIEF LIFESTYLE REPORTER · Mail OnlineThe United States has urged citizens and tourists across several states in Mexico to shelter in place after the Mexican cartel retaliated for the death of its leader on Sunday.
But the violence hasn't stopped some people from grumbling, with one traveler slammed for their insane complaint about a Marriott hotel in Puerto Vallarta amid the widespread unrest.
The disgruntled tourist took to Reddit to share their grievances, complaining that even though they are a platinum member, they were not allowed to check out late.
'I am platinum elite, over 1,000 lifetime Marriott nights,' the traveler wrote.
'Puerto Vallarta is on fire due to the cartel setting cars and buses on fire all over the city. The airport and Ubers and taxis are not running,' they continued.
They said that they had asked for a 4pm check out - adding they are 'entitled to it based on availability' - but the staff said they would not extend past 2pm and advised the guest to instead use the hospitality suite.
'We are supposed to be leaving for Bucerios this afternoon but that isn't looking very good,' they continued.
'Worst Bonvoy property I have ever experienced,' they declared.
'I don't think anyone will be checking in today, so there's no reason not to at least extend us to 4pm.'
The post, which appears to have since been deleted from Reddit, was screenshot and shared widely on X, formerly Twitter, where people mocked the user for the scathing review amid a violent situation.
'I'm imagining them screaming "I'm platinum elite! I'm platinum elite" when [the cartel] start popping off rounds in the lobby,' wrote one user.
'"I'm entitled" is the only thing that I got out of this,' scathed another.
'It just reminds everyone that when a crisis happens, nothing matters, including money and definitely, not status points,' pointed out someone else.
Another joked, 'Platinum elite won't save you from imminent danger. Titanium will though.'
American tourists have found themselves trapped in Mexico after Oseguera Cervantes, known as 'El Mencho,' was killed during a shoot-out in his home state of Jalisco as the Mexican military attempted to capture him.
Oseguera Cervantes was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of the fastest-growing criminal networks in Mexico.
The US State Department has issued a shelter-in-place order due to 'ongoing security operations and related road blockages and criminal activity' that encompasses vacation hotspots like Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
Tourists trapped in those cities have described the chaos as 'war breaking out in the streets.'
Some hotel guests were allegedly forced to evacuate their rooms and were told to find their own meals at off-site restaurants and shops.
The Jalisco New Generation Cartel is notorious for trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine to the US and staging brazen attacks against government officials who challenged it.
Following his death, gunmen unleashed violence across the country. Cars burned out by cartel members blocked roads in 20 Mexican states and left smoke billowing into the air.
People locked themselves in their homes in Guadalajara, Mexico's second-largest city and Jalisco's capital, and school was canceled Monday in several states as security forces were placed on alert all over the country. Even Guatemala reinforced security on its border with Mexico.
