Should PM take credit for Trump dropping his Greenland tariffs threat?
by Daily · Mail OnlineSir Keir Starmer has said the 'hard yards' of bolstering Arctic security can begin as he welcomed Donald Trump dropping tariff threats against European nations opposed to his ambitions to annex Greenland.
The Prime Minister said the US president's shift in position was 'good news', adding: 'We've got through the last few days with a mix of British pragmatism, common sense, but also that British sense of sticking to our values and our principles.'
Mr Trump rowed back on his threats yesterday evening after a meeting with Nato secretary-general Mark Rutte to discuss his decision to impose new 10 per cent tariffs as a result of opposition to his plans for the mineral-rich territory.
It comes after Sir Keir insisted earlier yesterday that he would 'not yield' in his stance over Greenland in the face of Mr Trump's demands, and vowed to stand up to the White House occupant during Prime Minister's Questions.
Writing in the Daily Mail today, columnist Dan Hodges said Sir Keir 'has finally discovered a backbone and stood up to Donald Trump', adding: 'Credit where it's due. Our Prime Minister finally brought the fire.'
BBC political editor Chris Mason also wrote: 'Within the government here in the UK, there is a quiet pride that Britain made its contribution to the welter of diplomacy European neighbours and others have been doing in recent days.'
But what do you think - should Sir Keir take credit for Mr Trump dropping his threats? Vote in the Daily Mail's latest poll.
In yesterday's poll, Mail readers were asked: 'Will 2026 be the 'year that Britain turns a corner' as Rachel Reeves claims?' Out of more than 11,000 votes, 97 per cent of you said 'no' and 3 per cent said 'yes'.
