Alexander Isak breaks his silence as he hits out at Newcastle
by CRAIG HOPE, CHIEF FOOTBALL REPORTER · Mail OnlineAlexander Isak has broken his silence on his Newcastle United strike with a bombshell statement in which he says trust has been lost after promises were broken.
The Swede is refusing to train with his team-mates and play for the club as he tries to force a move to Liverpool.
Daily Mail Sport revealed last month that Isak and his camp were furious last summer when new sporting director Paul Mitchell told them he would not be getting a new contract. Previous co-owner Amanda Staveley had discussed improved terms with them in the spring, believing he was worth and due a pay rise.
That led to a feeling of resentment and Isak's mind was made up that he wanted to move on, informing the club at the end of last season of his intention to leave.
However, Newcastle have been unable to sign the two strikers they need that would allow them to consider his sale to Liverpool, and sources close to the situation believe this has triggered the release of a statement in which Isak says there is no way back.
'I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken,' he wrote on his Instagram account. 'That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.
'The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading.
'When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.'
Isak also confirmed his absence from the PFA awards bash on Tuesday, where he was named in the Team of the Year and nominated for the top prize, was because it 'didn't feel right to be there'.
'I'm proud to be recognised by my fellow professionals with a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024/25,' he said.
'First and foremost I want to thank my teammates and everyone at Newcastle United who has supported me along the way.
'I'm not at the ceremony tonight. With everything going on, it didn't feel right to be there.'
Isak was the subject of a £110million bid from Liverpool last month, which was swiftly rejected by the Newcastle hierarchy, who are believed to value the Swede at closer to £150m.
The saga began at the beginning of the summer when the talented frontman initially reported an injury to keep him out of the Magpies' pre-season tour and the stand-off has continued since.
Isak was not with the Newcastle squad for the 0-0 draw away at Aston Villa in their Premier League opener on Saturday and the travelling fans aimed a series of x-rated chants at their absent star after full-time.
On Saturday, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was unsurprisingly probed on the issue of Isak's future at every opportunity and he provided an update after the Villa clash.
'We would like a resolution,' he said.

'I am talking about myself, I am sure the ownership, and the players. We need that clarity. You don't need any distraction.
'But I am not in control of that. I think only one person really (Isak) can control that.'
He added: 'This season, any season, every season, is going to be hard enough. You don't need any kind of distraction to swerve your thoughts, to unbalance what we're doing.
'I hope it's resolved quickly, because it's news around us all the time. The players have managed to shut that out and perform. We have to continue to do that.'
