AC Milan open talks with Pochettino after Allegri exit

AC Milan have opened discussions with Mauricio Pochettino as the Serie A club continue their search for a new manager following the dismissal of Massimiliano Allegri.

The development comes after Allegri reached a full verbal agreement to become Napoli’s new head coach and is expected to replace Antonio Conte.

Pochettino is currently in charge of the United States men’s national team and is preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

According to BBC Sport, the Argentine remains focused on the tournament. However, Milan are interested in appointing him once his contract with U.S. Soccer expires after the World Cup.

The 54-year-old has not managed at club level since leaving Chelsea at the end of the 2023-24 season. 

During his only campaign at Stamford Bridge, he guided the club to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League and the Carabao Cup final.

Before joining Chelsea, Pochettino spent 18 months at Paris Saint-Germain, where he won the Ligue 1 title and the French Cup.

He also enjoyed a successful spell at Tottenham Hotspur, leading the North London club to the UEFA Champions League final in 2019 after more than five years in charge.

Pochettino’s managerial career has also included spells at Southampton and Espanyol, while he earned 20 caps for Argentina during his playing career.

Milan decided to part ways with Allegri after failing to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

The Rossoneri finished fifth in Serie A following a 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari on the final day of the season.

Although the club secured qualification for the UEFA Europa League, Milan officials reportedly viewed the campaign as a major disappointment after missing out on Europe’s premier club competition for the second consecutive year.

The club’s latest managerial search comes as rivals Napoli prepare for another change in the dugout, with Allegri set to take charge after reaching a verbal agreement with the reigning Serie A champions.
