Atletico reject Real Madrid’s €150m bid for Alvarez
by Moronfolu Adeyemi · The Eagle OnlineAtletico Madrid have rejected a €150 million bid from Real Madrid for Argentina forward Julian Alvarez, setting the stage for a fresh chapter in the rivalry between the Spanish clubs.
Real Madrid confirmed the offer on Tuesday, saying it was submitted after a meeting of the club’s board of directors.
The club said: “Real Madrid CF announces that, following today’s Board of Directors meeting, it has made an offer of 150 million euros to Club Atletico de Madrid for the federative rights of the player Julian Alvarez.
“After studying and evaluating it, Atletico de Madrid has thanked the club for the offer, made within the framework of the good relations existing between both clubs, and has rejected it, referring to the player’s release clause.”
According to Real Madrid, Atletico pointed to Alvarez’s €500 million release clause in rejecting the proposal.
Atletico, however, swiftly challenged Madrid’s account of events and insisted it never considered the offer.
In a post on X, the club said: “You must have confused politeness with gratitude, but so there is no doubt: we do not thank you for anything.

The rejected bid came one day after Florentino Perez secured another four-year term as Real Madrid president in the club’s first contested presidential election in two decades.
Ahead of the vote, Perez had pledged to spend €150 million on an unnamed player, with Tuesday’s announcement revealing Alvarez as the target.
The Argentina international enjoyed an impressive campaign for Atletico last season, scoring 20 goals in 49 appearances.
His performances helped Atletico finish fourth in the league standings and strengthened his position as one of the club’s key players.
Despite Madrid’s record offer, Atletico’s response underlines its determination to keep Alvarez and avoid strengthening its city rival.
