The 38-year-old produced another decisive performance in Dallas, scoring twice to take his World Cup tally to 18 goals and move clear of Miroslav Klose at the top of the all-time scoring chart.
Argentina had the chance to take an early lead after being awarded a penalty following a VAR review when Lisandro Martínez was fouled inside the area by Stefan Posch.
However, Messi unexpectedly dragged his spot-kick wide, allowing Austria to grow into the contest.
Ralf Rangnick’s side responded positively and enjoyed a spell of pressure, with Marcel Sabitzer, David Alaba and Konrad Laimer helping Austria compete strongly against the world champions.

Despite Austria’s intensity, Argentina eventually found the breakthrough in the 38th minute.
Messi latched onto a low cross from Facundo Medina and calmly side-footed home his record-breaking 17th World Cup goal, moving past former Germany striker Klose in the history books.
Austria started the second half brightly and forced Emiliano Martínez into action, with the Argentina goalkeeper producing key saves to preserve his side’s advantage.
The South Americans gradually regained control as the match progressed, with Messi continuing to dictate play and create problems for the Austrian defence.
Argentina sealed victory deep into stoppage time when Messi struck again following a goalmouth scramble, smashing the ball through a crowded penalty area to register his 18th World Cup goal.
The win ensured Argentina booked their place in the knockout stage and extended their unbeaten run at the World Cup to eight matches.
For Austria, the defeat was only their second in 13 matches across all competitions, although they remain in contention to reach the next round.
Once again, it was Messi who proved decisive, rewriting another piece of football history and leading Argentina one step closer to a successful defence of their World Cup crown.
