Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his decision to retire from the Portugal national team after the November international break, bringing an end to his 23-year international career.

The 41-year-old forward made the announcement in a five-minute social media video on Thursday, saying he would hand back Portugal’s number seven shirt following the upcoming international fixtures.

Ronaldo described representing his country as one of the greatest achievements of his career, insisting that he was leaving with pride in what he had accomplished.

“Today I finish my walk on the pitch with the national team. I leave with my head held high, with pride in the path I took, and with the awareness that I gave everything I had for Portugal,” he said.

Reflecting on his achievements, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward said records and trophies might eventually be surpassed, but the connection he built with Portuguese supporters would remain.

“The goals pass, the cups are in museums, the records end up being beaten. But there is something that time can never erase, the place we occupy in people’s hearts.
