Bayern praise ‘humble’ Kane after Ballon d’Or triumph

Bayern Munich assistant coach Aaron Danks has praised Harry Kane following his Ballon d’Or triumph, saying the England captain will remain focused on his next goal despite winning football’s highest individual honour.

Kane, 33, received the prestigious award in his hometown of London on Monday evening, claiming the honour for the first time in his career.

Danks, who is overseeing Bayern while head coach Vincent Kompany recovers in hospital from a virus, said the recognition would not distract the striker from his immediate responsibilities.

“I am really happy for him and proud of what he’s achieved.

“I know Harry and his full focus will now be on his next goal, his next performances, his next games,” Danks said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“He’ll be straight back into that professional, humble mindset that got him to this level.”

Kane had won several individual goalscoring honours during his time at Tottenham Hotspur but finished as runner-up in the Premier League and Champions League without securing a first-team trophy before leaving the club for Bayern in 2023.

Since moving to Munich, he has won two Bundesliga titles and the German Cup, while Bayern have reached the Champions League semi-finals twice in three seasons.

Danks said Kane deserved greater recognition for his achievements even before he began winning trophies with the German club.

“I remember years ago when he was back home in England, and everybody spoke about him not winning trophies, but if you looked at his career and what he was achieving, he was having a fantastic career.

“He was taking the England team to European finals; he was taking Tottenham to Champions League finals.

“Maybe he wasn’t getting the recognition in terms of trophies that he deserved, but those things are coming now for him,” he said.

Kane and the other Bayern representatives who travelled to London for the ceremony were expected to return to Munich at lunchtime on Tuesday ahead of the club’s German Cup match against second-tier Magdeburg on Wednesday.

Danks confirmed that Kane would train later in the day and remain available for the fixture.

“They’re due back at lunchtime today. He’ll train, practice this afternoon and be available for tomorrow… Our full focus is on the game tomorrow,” he said.

The assistant coach also provided an update on Kompany, revealing that he had visited the Bayern manager in hospital after he was rushed there on Friday following a collapse on the training pitch.

“He’s in good spirits. It looks like every day he’s getting better. There are no major updates in terms of diagnosis or a return to work; it’s very calm, let him rest, let him recover,” Danks said.

Bayern sit top of the Bundesliga after seven matches, level on points with Borussia Dortmund but ahead on goal difference.

The two sides are scheduled to meet in Munich on Saturday.
