FCT, Anambra: Many die in rice distribution stampedes + Video
by Hassan Muaz · The Eagle OnlineMany persons are feared dead in free rice and other palliative distribution stampedes that occurred in the early hours of Saturday in Anambra State and Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
While Okija was the venue of the stampede in Anambra State, that in the FCT occurred at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama.
The incident comes a few days after over 35 people, mostly children, died during a stampede at a funfair in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
A video posted on X by a user captured the vivid scene in Okija, with most of those affected being women.

In Abuja, no fewer than 10 persons were confirmed dead with many injured during the stampede.
The church has since suspended the distribution of the palliatives.
The palliative distribution, which turned bloody between 7am and 8am, had people from Mpape, Gishiri, and other nearby settlements in attendance.
Policemen and other security agencies were brought in to bring the situation under control.
