Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has described Nigeria as a highly competitive side and expects a difficult test when both countries meet in Wednesday’s international friendly at the Estadio Dr. Magalhaes Pessoa in Leiria.

The fixture serves as part of Portugal’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the Super Eagles continue their rebuilding process after missing out on qualification for the tournament.

Speaking during his pre-match conference, Martinez said the game would provide valuable lessons for his side ahead of their World Cup opener against DR Congo.

Martinez said: “I think there are two main aspects for us (before we play) against a team like Congo.

“There are aspects, in terms of Nigeria’s forward players, where I think there are qualities that will be very helpful for us to defend as a team in the areas we’re going to face against DR Congo.

“I expect a Nigerian team to be very competitive.

“I enjoyed the game against Poland, the last friendly. I love the ideas of the coach.

“I think, flexibly, as a team, using the different systems that they use, fits different players in different positions.”

Nigeria go into the match after a 2-2 draw against Poland, while Portugal defeated Chile 2-1 in their previous friendly.

The former Belgium manager also praised the depth within Eric Chelle’s squad, saying the Super Eagles remain a strong opponent despite the absence of key forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.

Martinez said: “I can see that obviously players like Osimhen and Lookman are not here, but they are replaced by other players.

“They have a really high level of performance, and I expect a very competitive game.

“Real quality players with a lot of experience like (Calvin) Bassey, Alex (Iwobi) – players that I know very, very well. (I expect) a competitive game that I think is going to help both teams in many aspects.”

Portugal will be making their ninth appearance at the World Cup and are still seeking a first title, with their best performance remaining a third-place finish in 1966.

Martinez’s side begin their Group K campaign against DR Congo on June 17 before facing debutants Uzbekistan on June 23 in Houston.

They will conclude the group stage against Colombia on June 27 in Miami.
