FIFA launches probe into violent brawl after Argentina-Spain final
by The Eagle Online · The Eagle OnlineWorld football governing body, FIFA, has launched a formal investigation into a violent post-match brawl that occurred following Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final in New Jersey, United States of America on Sunday.
The football governing body has appointed a prosecutor to review match reports after several ugly altercations broke out on the pitch.
Among the key incidents to probe is the Leandro Paredes clash.
The Argentine midfielder was shown a red card after grabbing Spain’s Eric García by the throat and shoving Gavi to the turf.
Another is that of Argentina’s Nahuel Molina who appeared to strike Spain’s captain Rodri in the midsection while running past him during the celebrations.

Also for probe is an incident involving Argentina’s assistant coach, Roberto Ayala, who allegedly threw a punch at Spain’s Dani Olmo during the melee.
The on-field scuffle on Sunday compounds another ongoing FIFA Investigation opened in the week of the final regarding Argentinian players displaying a political banner about the Falkland Islands following their semifinal victory over England.
