UEFA orders minute’s silence across competitions after Spanish striker’s death
by Ganiyu Mubarak · The Eagle OnlineThe Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has announced a minute’s silence across its competitions this week following the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel Alameda at the age of 30.
The decision will see players and officials observe a period of silence before matches in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League as European football pays tribute to the Spanish forward.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin expressed sadness over the player’s death, saying the tragedy had left the football community heartbroken.
“We are heartbroken by the death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda. We have searched for words and found only silence.
“In that silence, our hearts and thoughts are with his family, his teammates, everyone at CD Tenerife, and all those who mourn this tragic loss,” Ceferin said in a statement released by UEFA.
De Miguel died on Tuesday morning after sustaining serious injuries in a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a Spanish second-division fixture on Monday.
The incident occurred in the closing stages of the encounter at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium, with the striker collapsing unconscious after the collision.
Medical personnel rushed to attend to him before he was transported to hospital, where he remained in critical condition until his death.

“The family of Jesus de Miguel would like to thank everyone for their expressions of support and, from the bottom of their hearts, ask that their privacy be respected at this terrible time,” the club added.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) also joined the tributes, expressing condolences to the striker’s family, teammates and supporters.
“Spanish football mourns the loss of Jesus de Miguel. Devastated by the sad news, from the RFEF we wish to express our deepest sorrow for his passing today,” the federation stated.
