2026 World Cup: Vinícius saves Brazil from defeat in Morocco opener
by Moronfolu Adeyemi · The Eagle OnlineVinícius Júnior scored on his 50th appearance for Brazil as the five-time world champions fought back to secure a 1-1 draw against Morocco in their opening Group C match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The result extended Brazil’s unbeaten run in World Cup opening matches to 21 games, comprising 17 wins and four draws.
Morocco made a bright start and looked the more dangerous side in the opening stages, creating several opportunities against a shaky Brazilian defence.
The Atlas Lions came close when Neil El Aynaoui connected with a cutback from Noussair Mazraoui, but Gabriel Magalhães produced a crucial block to keep the score level.
After weathering the early pressure, Brazil gradually settled into the contest.
However, it was Morocco who struck first in the 21st minute.
A swift counter-attack saw Brahim Díaz release Ismael Saibari through on goal, and the PSV forward calmly chipped the ball over goalkeeper Alisson to hand Morocco the lead.
Brazil responded 10 minutes later through Vinícius junior.
The Real Madrid winger cut in from the left flank before firing a powerful effort into the far corner to level the scores and mark his 50th international appearance in style.
Lucas Paquetá nearly completed the turnaround before the break, but Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou denied his acrobatic effort to ensure the sides went into half-time level.
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti made two changes at the interval, bringing on Danilo and Fabinho for the booked Casemiro and Roger Ibañez.
The substitutions helped Brazil gain more control of possession, although clear-cut chances became scarce in a second half disrupted by frequent stoppages.
Raphinha forced another save from Bounou after being picked out by Vinícius, but neither side could find a winner.

Morocco came closest late on when El Aynaoui tested Alisson from distance, but the Brazil goalkeeper reacted well to preserve the draw.
Neither side could find a winner in the closing stages as the points were shared.
The result will encourage Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi after an impressive performance in his first competitive match in charge since his appointment in March.
Morocco’s attention now turns to a meeting with Scotland as they continue their bid for a place in the knockout stage.
Brazil, meanwhile, avoided defeat thanks to Vinícius’ landmark goal but will look for an improved performance when they face Haiti in their next group match.
