AFCON: Morocco demand sanctions after Senegal’s walkout, threaten lawsuit

Morocco has announced plans to pursue legal action with the Confederation of African Football and FIFA following Senegal’s walk-out during the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 final in Rabat.

In a statement posted on its official X handle on Monday, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation said Senegal’s decision to leave the pitch came after a referee awarded Morocco a late penalty, a call it said was supported by expert opinion.

“The Royal Moroccan Football Federation announces that it will pursue legal action with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA regarding the Senegalese national team’s withdrawal from the final match against Morocco and the subsequent events following the referee’s decision to award a penalty kick, a decision deemed correct by all experts,” the statement read.

The federation said the incident disrupted the closing stages of the match and affected the players’ performance.

It also thanked Moroccan supporters for their backing, praising their loyalty and large turnout throughout the tournament, while commending all stakeholders involved in hosting the championship.

The final, played at the Stade Mohammed V on Sunday, descended into confusion late in regulation time.

With the score at 0–0, Senegal had a goal ruled out for offside, followed shortly by a VAR review that awarded Morocco a penalty in the eighth minute of added time.

Senegal’s head coach, Pape Thiaw, then led his players off the pitch in protest, prompting security intervention.

After a delay, the Senegalese team was persuaded to return to the field.

Morocco’s penalty was saved by goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, forcing extra time.

In the fourth minute of the first half of extra time, Midfielder Pape Gueye scored to give Senegal the title.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has condemned the conduct, while CAF said it is reviewing match footage and will refer the case to its disciplinary bodies for action against those involved.

If sanctioned, Senegal may be fined or suspended for the walk-off.
