Real Betis stun Real Madrid as PSG suffer home defeat

Real Madrid suffered their first defeat of the Spanish La Liga season after losing 1-0 to Real Betis on Friday night.

Jose Mourinho’s side conceded an 81st-minute goal from Troy Parrott as Real Betis secured a smash-and-grab victory over the star-studded capital club, who wasted several chances and failed to maintain their winning start to the season.

Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappe were wasteful in front of goal, with the latter failing to hit the target after being played through on goal by the former.

Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles made five crucial saves to deny Los Merengues, while Jude Bellingham also saw a header saved and Dean Hujsen watched another header hit the bar.

Parrott, who came on as a substitute, emerged as the unlikely hero when he pounced on a defensive lapse to fire a clinical strike past Thibaut Courtois in the Real Madrid goal nine minutes from time.

Real Madrid found the back of the net three minutes before the end of normal time, but Carlos Espi’s brilliant effort was ruled out for offside in the build-up.

The worst moment of the night was reserved for Mbappe, who missed a penalty in added time as Real Madrid suffered their first league defeat of the season in week four.

The result also extended Real Madrid’s winless run at Real Betis to four matches.
