Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Tuesday appealed for calm among protesters demanding the rescue of abducted pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, assuring residents that efforts were ongoing to secure their release.

The governor spoke while addressing demonstrators at the Oyo State Government House in Ibadan amid growing concern over the abduction of pupils and teachers during attacks on schools in the Ahoro-Esiele community.

Makinde urged residents not to engage in blame games but to support security agencies working to bring the victims home safely.

He said: “So it’s not the time for us to say, well, it is the President that should have handled this, it is the governor or the local government.

“This is a time to pull together as one. We’re not dealing with normal human beings.”

The governor described the abductors as people whose actions showed extreme brutality.

He said: “How will somebody take a fellow human being and slaughter him? Is that somebody that is normal? So these are not normal people.”

Makinde appealed to students, workers, teachers and other residents to remain patient and continue to trust the government.

According to him: “I can only appeal to you, all the students, the workers, the teachers.

“Please have trust in your government. We’re doing our best.”

The governor disclosed that federal security operatives had been working in the affected area for the past two weeks as part of efforts to secure the release of the victims.

He said: “I’ve had federal government security operatives here for the past two weeks.

“They spent their sallah here. I’ve been meeting with them morning, night and sometimes three or four times in a day.”

Makinde also warned against actions that could create division or encourage the abductors.

He said: “We shouldn’t provide oxygen to the people that want to see us divided.

“The response at this time should be to pull together and allow the government to see this through.”

The governor expressed optimism that the abducted pupils and teachers would be rescued safely.

He said: “I can give you the assurance that our children and their teachers are listening to us.”

The protest came amid increasing public concern over the continued captivity of the victims, with relatives and residents calling on authorities to intensify efforts to secure their freedom.

Makinde reiterated his administration’s commitment to working with security agencies until the abducted pupils and teachers are safely reunited with their families.
