Two Doctors Charged Over Treatment of Giorgos Mazonakis Before His Death
by Bill Giannopoulos · Greek City TimesTwo doctors at a private clinic in Athens have been charged with endangerment resulting in death following the death of popular Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis.
The development came on Friday as authorities continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death after he reportedly visited the clinic for a plasmapheresis procedure.
According to information cited by Greek authorities, the doctors are accused of jointly committing the offence, which carries criminal liability when a person is allegedly exposed to danger that results in death.
The investigation is focusing, among other issues, on evidence indicating that Mazonakis was undergoing the medical procedure at the clinic when he died.
Investigators are also examining whether the clinic’s medical office had the required licence to carry out the procedure.
Autopsy does not determine cause of death
A forensic examination conducted on Friday did not establish a definitive cause of death.
The forensic pathologist reportedly identified findings during the autopsy, but said they were not sufficient at this stage to determine exactly what caused the singer’s death.
Further answers are expected from toxicological and other laboratory examinations.
Authorities issued a death certificate, allowing preparations for Mazonakis’ funeral to proceed while the wider investigation continues.
Investigation continues
The charges against the two doctors mark a major development in the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mazonakis’ final hours.
However, the filing of criminal charges does not itself establish guilt. The investigation and judicial process will determine whether the doctors’ actions contributed to the singer’s death and whether any medical or licensing violations occurred.
Mazonakis’ death has shocked Greece and sparked intense public interest, with authorities now examining both the medical treatment he received shortly before his death and the events that followed.
The precise cause of death remains pending further forensic and laboratory evidence.
