Eleven sailors are missing after drone strikes hit two cargo vessels in the Black Sea near Bulgaria, leaving one ship sunk and several crew members injured.

The Turkish-owned Azov Concord sank after the attack, with five crew members rescued and 11 reported missing.

A second vessel, the Ukrainian-owned Chelsea 3, was struck by three drones while travelling from Turkey towards Moldova. Several crew members were reportedly wounded in the explosions.

The attacks occurred approximately 18 nautical miles off the Bulgarian coast, raising fresh concerns about the widening security risks facing commercial shipping in the Black Sea amid Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Bulgaria has moved to summon the Russian ambassador over the incident.

The circumstances surrounding the strikes, including responsibility for the attacks, remain subject to confirmation.
