Israel Attorney General Demands Evidence in Election Fraud Probe
by Kosta Papadopoulos · Greek City TimesIsrael’s Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara on Tuesday called on the Shin Bet domestic security service to provide an update on the progress of its investigation into allegations of election fraud involving Arab parties, stressing that authorities have presented no supporting evidence so far.
“In a state governed by the rule of law, authorities cannot investigate citizens or elected representatives without evidence to justify such action. If the Shin Bet or any other authority possesses evidence warranting an investigation, it must present it,” Baharav-Miara said in a statement distributed to the media by her spokesperson.
Her comments followed reports that Shin Bet chief David Zini, an ally of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, had requested the questioning of Arab party leaders as part of an investigation into suspected electoral fraud during last Tuesday’s parliamentary elections.
“Anyone who needs to be questioned will be questioned. But no one will face an investigation in the absence of evidence,” Baharav-Miara insisted.

She also accused the Shin Bet of failing to submit its findings to the “special investigative committee” operating under her supervision.
Netanyahu’s Likud party responded by accusing the attorney general of “obstructing the investigation”.
“She continues to obstruct the investigation and cover up this serious case of foreign interference in the electoral process,” the party said.
“With Baharav-Miara’s tacit support, we are witnessing Gadi Eisenkot, Yair Golan and the leaders of the left-wing alliance inciting rebellion against the heads of Israel’s security services,” Likud added.
Meanwhile, Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the centrist alliance of Israeli opposition parties, accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of conducting a “pogrom against democracy and the rule of law”.
