US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth Makes Surprise Visit to Israel
by Kosta Papadopoulos · Greek City TimesUS Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday during an unannounced visit to Israel, news website Axios reported, citing two well-informed sources.
The Pentagon and the Israeli Embassy in Washington had not confirmed Hegseth’s visit at the time of the Reuters report.
The reported meeting comes as US President Donald Trump has expressed support for Netanyahu in recent days ahead of Israel’s parliamentary elections on 27 October.
The elections will be the first since Hamas launched its unprecedented attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, an assault that shocked the country and plunged the Middle East into turmoil.
Israel subsequently launched large-scale military operations in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Iran.
