US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, while taking a swipe at the Norwegian Nobel Committee ahead of Friday’s announcement of the 2026 winner.
“I don’t know what their decision will be,” Trump said, referring to the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, which the Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce on Friday. “They’re known for not giving it to people like me,” he added.
Since returning to the White House last year, Trump has repeatedly claimed that he deserves the award.
“It’s now time,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, arguing that he had intervened to help end eight wars since taking office in January 2025.
“However, it was a great honour to receive it indirectly last time from the recipient herself, who said that nobody in history deserved it more than President Trump,” he added.
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado handed Trump the Nobel Peace Prize she received last year in January.
The leaders of Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan have said they nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Among those considered contenders for this year’s award are Pope Leo XIV, the International Criminal Court and Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories.
