US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has demanded greater transparency from Moscow after reports that a laboratory technician in Siberia died from plague, as Rubio prepares to travel to Greece.
Speaking in Reykjavik on Tuesday, Rubio said the United States was monitoring the situation “very closely” and called on Russia to provide more information about the reported death and any measures being taken.
“I think it’s incumbent upon Russia to obviously share more information with the world,” Rubio said, urging Moscow to be “transparent”.
The comments follow reports that the laboratory worker died last week, raising international concern over the circumstances surrounding the case and whether others may have been exposed.
Russian authorities have denied reports that anti-plague measures were being imposed following the death.
Plague is a serious bacterial disease that can be transmitted through infected animals, fleas or, in some forms, through close contact with an infected person. There has been no confirmed wider outbreak linked to the reported Siberian case.
Rubio heads to Greece
Rubio is also due to travel to Greece, where his visit is expected to focus on US-Greek relations and wider regional security issues.
His trip comes as Washington continues to closely monitor developments involving Russia, while Greece remains a key US partner in the eastern Mediterranean and NATO.
Rubio’s call for greater transparency over the reported plague death adds an unexpected international dimension to his diplomatic agenda as he prepares for his next stop in Greece.
US officials are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
