Pilot Survives After  F-35 Fighter Jet Crashes in California

A US Marine Corps F-35B Lightning II fighter jet crashed near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in the San Diego area of southern California on Friday, with the pilot ejecting safely before the aircraft went down.

A spokesperson for MCAS Miramar confirmed the aircraft was an F-35B, the short take-off and vertical landing variant operated by the US Marine Corps.

The pilot successfully used the aircraft’s ejection system before the crash. Rescue crews located the pilot and transported them to a nearby hospital. No information on the pilot’s condition was immediately released.

Television footage from US news networks showed thick black smoke rising from the burning wreckage at the crash site.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash, and an investigation is underway.

Marine Corps Air Station Miramar is one of the United States’ best-known military aviation bases. It served as the original home of the Navy’s elite Fighter Weapons School, popularly associated with the Top Gun films starring Tom Cruise, although the school later relocated to Nevada.
