Five Dead After Amazon Cargo Plane Crashes

At least five people died after an Amazon cargo aircraft ran off the runway at Miami International Airport and crashed into several vehicles, according to the local sheriff.

The Prime Air aircraft, operating Flight 7598 from Puerto Rico, left the runway at around 2 p.m. local time on Sunday — about 6 a.m. Monday in Sydney — and came to rest northwest of the airport.

Initial information from authorities indicated that the cargo aircraft struck multiple vehicles after leaving the runway before catching fire.

More than 60 firefighters rushed to the scene to battle the blaze and provide first aid to people who needed medical treatment.

Videos circulating on social media showed thick smoke and large flames rising from the crash site. The aircraft reportedly crossed a road before coming to a stop, with several vehicles and trucks in the area.

FAA launches investigation as Miami airport closes runways

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the cause of the serious aviation accident.

Shortly after the crash, Miami International Airport closed all runways as well as roads within the airport complex.

Later images from the scene showed that firefighters had brought the blaze under control, while large numbers of police officers, firefighters and ambulances remained at the site.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances that caused the aircraft to leave the runway. Officials are also expected to clarify the exact number and identities of the victims as the investigation progresses.
