Veteran Bollywood actress-singer Sulakshana Pandit passed away on Thursday, 6 November 2025 in Mumbai at the age of 71, after a prolonged illness. No official statement had been released by her family or representatives at the time of the report.

Born on 12 July 1954 in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, Sulakshana Pandit began singing at the age of nine and rose to prominence in the 1970s in Bollywood, both as an actress and a playback singer. She was part of the well-known Pandit family in music: she was the sister of actress Vijayta Pandit and the composer duo Jatin‑Lalit, and the niece of classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj.

Her big break as a singer came with the song “Saat Samandar Paar Se” alongside Lata Mangeshkar from the 1967 film Taqdeer.  She won a Filmfare Award for her song “Tu Hi Sagar Tu Hi Kinara” from the film Sankalp in 1976. As an actress, she made her debut in 1975 with Uljhan and later acted in successful films such as Hera Pheri, Waqt Ki Deewar, Apnapan and Khandaan.

She worked with many of Bollywood’s biggest stars including Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Vinod Khanna, Shashi Kapoor and Shatrughan Sinha. Her final playback recording was in the 1996 film Khamoshi: The Musical, which featured music by her brothers Jatin-Lalit.

Industry observers noted that her decision not to marry reportedly stemmed from a past relationship with superstar Sanjeev Kumar, whose rejection led her to remain single.

Sulakshana Pandit leaves behind a legacy of memorable songs and films that continue to resonate with audiences, and her passing marks a poignant moment for those who admired her dual talents as singer and actor.
