An off-duty Police Department officer is under investigation after he shot a man in the head in the Bronx on Monday, the police said. The officer is part of the security operation at Gracie Mansion and City Hall, according to two people with knowledge of the shooting.

The officer, whose name has not been released, fired his gun at about 9 p.m. after “an interaction with several males” in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx, the police said on Tuesday.

The man who was shot, who is 30, was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where he was in critical condition.

The department’s Force Investigation Division is investigating the shooting, and the officer, who is assigned to the Intelligence Bureau, has been placed on modified duty and has turned in his gun.

The police said the shooting was related to a vehicle that had been reported stolen. They did not provide more details.

Ariana Melo, a 39-year-old bartender at Bronx Public, a bar and restaurant on West 231st Street, said she was working on Monday night when she heard a loud bang at the window.

After she realized a bullet had come through, Ms. Melo said she called 911. The police arrived almost immediately.

No one was hurt inside the bar, where a handful of patrons had been watching Venezuela play Italy in a semifinal of the World Baseball Classic.

“No one was here, thank God,” Ms. Melo said. “It was a slow night. It was a rainy night.”
The police spent the night scouring the restaurant for the bullet and returned on Tuesday, she said.
