The officers “took fire” upon arriving at the house just after 9 p.m. local time Sunday in Tremonton, Utah, a city of about 13,000 people roughly 20 miles south of the Idaho border, the Brigham City Police Department said in a statement on Monday.
An officer from the Tremonton Garland Police Department who responded to the call was speaking with a person at the residence when a man came out and opened fire, “striking and killing the officer,” the statement said.
The man then shot a second Tremonton Garland officer, who was “struck and killed,” it said.
The man fired several rounds into the vehicle of a deputy from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s office who had also responded to the scene, injuring him and his police dog. They were in fair condition, the police said.
Bystanders persuaded the shooter to put down his weapon, the police statement said. He was charged with aggravated murder and was being held at the Box Elder County Jail, the statement said.
