Egypt’s Al Azhar condemns treacherous terrorist bombing targeting mosque in Syria
by Egypt Today staff · EgyptTodayCAIRO – 26 December 2025: Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, Egypt’s top Islamic Sunni institute, strongly condemned, in the harshest terms, the treacherous terrorist bombing that targeted one of the houses of Allah in Homs Governorate, Syrian Arab Republic, during the performance of Friday prayers, resulting in the martyrdom and injury of a number of innocent worshippers.
In a statement, Al-Azhar affirmed that this heinous terrorist crime constitutes a blatant assault on the sanctity of human life, which Allah Almighty has forbidden to be violated, and a flagrant violation of the sanctity and inviolability of houses of worship. It is clear evidence of the perpetrators’ complete stripping away of all religious, humanitarian, and moral values, their shameless disregard for the value of human life, and their transformation into savage forces that threaten the security and stability of societies.
As Al-Azhar Al-Sharif extended its condolences to the Syrian people, in all their components, it calls upon Syrians of all sects and denominations to unite and stand shoulder to shoulder in confronting this dark plot that targets the country’s security and stability, seeks to spread chaos, and aims to undermine the unity of this authentic and deeply rooted people, stressing the necessity of standing as one solid front against this imminent danger.
In this context, Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif extended its deepest condolences and sincere sympathy to the families of the martyrs and to the brotherly Syrian people, praying to Allah Almighty to envelop the victims in His boundless mercy, to grant the injured a swift recovery, and to protect Syria and its people from all harm and evil.
A terrorist bombing targeted the Imam Ali Mosque in the Wadi al-Dhahab neighborhood of Homs on Friday, according to local media reports.
Initial reports indicate the attack was a suicide bombing carried out during Friday prayers. Syrian state television reported that eight people were killed and 18 others injured, noting that the explosion was caused by improvised explosive devices planted inside the mosque.
