Chelsea dealt Champions League blow after Pedro Neto Fulham drama
by Stuart Jamieson · ChronicleLiveChelsea will take on Everton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday WITHOUT manager Enzo Maresca after he was handed a one-match touchline ban for his celebrations in their win over Fulham.
The Blues boss was shown a yellow card by referee Anthony Taylor following Pedro Neto's late winner in their 2-1 victory over Fulham. It was his third caution of the season, meaning a one-match suspension which will come when they face the Toffees this coming weekend.
It's another huge fixture list in the race for a Premier League top-five spot - and a place in next season's Champions League. Newcastle, Manchester City, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa are all battling for positions and so Maresca's ban will be unwelcome news for the Blues.
Newcastle know all about coping without their head coach, of course, with Jason Tindall taking the reigns as Eddie Howe recovers from pneumonia. The United boss could again be absent from the touchline for Saturday's clash with Ipswich Town at St James' Park.
Maresca admitted he 'over-celebrated' at Craven Cottage after Pedro Neto's goal, which earned a comeback win. Chelsea had trailed to Alex Iwobi's goal before Tyrique George equalised on 83 mintues - and Neto's late goal sealed an important win.
"I was very happy, first of all because it's a nice feeling to win the game at the end but I think it was a moment for the players because they deserve to share that moment with the fans," he said.
"So this is the reason why I left the pitch immediately and then when we scored the second one I celebrated and this is the reason why they gave me a yellow card.”
