Ben Dawson

I left Newcastle United in July and Leicester have now turned to me after Steve Cooper sacking

Former Newcastle United coach Ben Dawson will hold the fort at Leicester City after Steve Cooper was sacked.

Cooper was only appointed last June, but the ex-Nottingham Forest boss has been dismissed following two league wins in the opening dozen matches of the season. Newly-promoted Leicester are two points above the relegation zone.

Cooper's assistant, Alan Tate, and first-team coach and analyst Steve Rands have also left the club so training will now be overseen by Dawson, who will be supported by coaches Danny Alcock and Andy Hughes, as Leicester begin the process of appointing a new manager. In a statement, Leicester said they 'hope to make an appointment as soon as possible'

Dawson, who left his role as first-team development coach at Newcastle four months ago, has been in a similar situation before. In fact, Dawson and Neil Redfearn oversaw two of Newcastle's pre-season games in the Far East back in 2019 before Steve Bruce formally took his place in the dugout.

Dawson initially joined Newcastle's academy as a professional development coach a decade ago and also served as under-21s lead coach and academy head of coaching. Dawson became first-team development coach in 2021, supporting the club's talent pathway into the senior squad, before moving to Leicester last summer.

Following his departure, academy director Steve Harper hailed Dawson for his 'excellent contribution to academy life at Newcastle' after he played a 'key role in the development of many players'. Diarmuid O'Carroll succeeded Dawson as Newcastle's new under-21 lead coach back in September.
