Liverpool dealt major double injury scare days before Carabao Cup final vs Newcastle United
by Kieran King · ChronicleLiveLiverpool have been dealt a double injury blow ahead of Sunday's Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United.
Arne Slot's side were in action at home to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday night as they exited the competition by losing on penalties after a 1-0 defeat on the night and a 1-1 draw on aggregate.
While crashing out of the Champions League is no doubt going to be Liverpool's main concern right now, they are going to have to quickly turn their attention to the Wembley final against Newcastle.
Other than winning the Premier League, it's the other remaining chance of silverware for Liverpool following their FA Cup defeat at the hands of Plymouth Argyle - and Tuesday night's loss against PSG.
With the impending Carabao Cup showpiece in mind, Slot is going to be keen to ensure most of his first-team squad are fit and available. However, two players could be doubtful after limping off in the Champions League.
Firstly, Trent Alexander-Arnold was forced off in the second half of regular time at Anfield. The 26-year-old landed awkwardly on his right ankle as he lunged into a tackle and it didn't look good. He was replaced by Jarell Quansah, who deputised at right-back for the final 17 minutes plus extra-time.
Then in the 111th minute, with penalties looking, the Reds were dealt another concern as Ibrahima Konate went down unchallenged. Wataru Endo ended up replacing the Frenchman, who hobbled off alongside the Liverpool physio.
It's unclear whether or not Alexander-Arnold and Konate are going to be out for the Carabao Cup final, but the Reds don't have much of a turnaround before the game.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have an extra 24 hours to prepare following their 1-0 win over West Ham in the Premier League on Monday night. Midfielder Bruno Guimaraes was the match-winner for the Magpies in the second half.
