Tributes as Denis Law dies aged 84 following battle with Alzheimer's disease
by PA Sport Staff · ChronicleLiveLegendary Scotland and Manchester United striker Denis Law has sadly passed away at the age of 84, as confirmed by his family.
During his illustrious career, Law secured two league titles with Manchester United and was an integral member of the iconic 1968 European Cup-winning team under the revered management of Sir Matt Busby, when they made history as the first English club to claim the prestigious trophy.
In a heartfelt statement, his family shared: "It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace."
The family also extended their gratitude, saying: "We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you."
He announced in August 2021 that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and vascular dementia.
Law accumulated an impressive 237 goals across 404 appearances during his 11-year tenure at Old Trafford, concluding in 1973. This remarkable record positions him third in Manchester United's all-time goal scorers list, behind Wayne Rooney and Sir Bobby Charlton.
Nicknamed 'The King', Law defied the limitations of his slender build, striking fear into defenders with his courageous tactics and blistering speed across an 18-year playing career. In addition to his time at Manchester United, Law's professional journey encompassed stints at his inaugural club Huddersfield, Manchester City (across two spells), and Italian side Torino.
Representing Scotland on 55 occasions - having first donned the national jersey aged 18 in 1958 - Law co-holds the country's all-time leading scorer title alongside Kenny Dalglish, boasting an impressive 30 goals.
The transfers which led Law from Huddersfield to Manchester City in 1960, and later to Italian outfit Torino in 1961, and then to Manchester United in 1962, all set British records at the time of their completion.
