Newcastle United get Ian Wright revenge in off air moment as Arsenal accuse Magpies of 'chaos'
by Lee Ryder · ChronicleLiveNewcastle United fans soaked up the Carabao Cup glory at the Emirates Stadium on a genuine glory night for Eddie Howe's side.
After the players had finished their lap of appreciation and a tearful Martin Dubravka had left the field, Newcastle fans remained inside the ground to celebrate the victory. And just as Arsenal legend Ian Wright was about to go live, the Toon Army took their opportunity to make their point to the man who once tormented them in the red and white of Arsenal and claret and blue of West Ham!
Wright, who was stood with Newcastle icon Les Ferdinand ready to go live, was stunned when taunts of: "Wrighty, Wright what's the score!" came flying his way. With ITV's panel off air, Wright had to compose himself but defeat was hard to take for the ex-England star as he moaned that Martin Odergaard had been shoved by Alexander Isak for the opening goal.
This led presenter Mark Pougatch to say: "Doesn't matter lads it was given." Wright - who scored twice 29 years ago in the Coca-Cola Cup to end Newcastle's League Cup run - was later seen joking with Ferdinand as he left the press area but his side had been well beaten.
Anthony Gordon hits nail on the head with Alexander Isak's form and dressing room mentality
After the game both Eddie Howe and Mikel Arteta were asked about the form of Alexander Isak.
The striker has netted 15 goals now this season and has a half-century to his name in Newcastle colours. With the Sweden star linked continuously with Arsenal, he was dubbed the "best in Europe" by one interviewer.
It left Gordon to say: "I think so. I think everyone is in agreement with that. He's on fire. Even for my goal. I'm just gambling back post."
The message from the dressing room is now simple from Newcastle, Gordon adding: "We don't have time to celebrating this one. They're one of the best sides in Europe, it's only 2-0. We need to stay humble."
Mikel Arteta sums up Newcastle's style of play
Mikel Arteta was left to reflect on another defeat to Eddie Howe's Newcastle after losses at St James' Park and now this.
The truth is Newcastle attacked the game like they were playing at home and Arsenal had no answer. After the match, Arteta - who did say his side can still do it - summed up the style of play from the Magpies.
Arteta said: "I have seen the goal and it is something they do - they create the chaos, and it gets to the wrong player and Isak puts it away."
