Newcastle United issue treble injury statement as selection surprise beckons at Liverpool

Newcastle United could be about to spring a major selection surprise at Anfield with Joelinton and Sven Botman both described as 'close' to a return. Eddie Howe gave the injury update at a media briefing ahead of the Premier League game against Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Botman is touch and go for Newcastle United's encounter at Anfield after making progress on a knee issue and the same can be said of Joelinton who has been suffering with a similar issue. Botman has not featured since the Carabao Cup semi-final defeat against Arsenal in the second leg of the semi-final. But he will be assessed for the clash against runaway leaders Liverpool.

Joelinton's last appearance came in the 2-1 loss against Fulham in the Premier League but he could be a surprise inclusion at Liverpool. The Magpies have conceded 10 goals in the Premier League since Botman last figured and Joelinton's absence has resulted in a lack of physicality in midfield.

When asked about Botman's prospects of starring on Merseyside, Howe said: "Sven's improving and he's improving quickly, so we'll see whether he makes it. It'll be close."

Italy international Sandro Tonali suffered a hamstring injury in training last week and was only able to play in a cameo role against Forest at St James' Park. Howe admitted he had been 'reluctant' to use the playmaker at the weekend but said: "He came through the game fine."

Joelinton's return would be a major boost for such a big encounter at Liverpool. The Magpies struggled defending set-pieces against Forest at the weekend and the Brazilian powerhouse could add an extra dimension to United's play. Howe said: "Again with Joe, it is similar to Sven he is really improving and doing really well and pushing.

"He is another player who could be quite close. Joe is always important from a number of perspectives especially in defending set-pieces.

"He has those key aspects that we have missed when he's not there. His physicality and strength there is an obvious presence missing in our midfield. Joey is a massive player for us."
