Arsenal stunned, Champions League emotions and Newcastle United's Monday Night Football record

by · ChronicleLive

In-form Newcastle United will be looking to get West Ham to dance to their usual home happy Monday tune when the teams return to domestic action at St James’ Park.

While the Magpies’ overall recent record in games on the first day of the working week has been let down by their form on the road, it is now more than 16 years since they lost a Premier League home game on a Monday.

But while that defeat – a 2-0 reverse against Chelsea in the final home game of the 2007-08 season – is a distant memory, Newcastle are currently looking up, having climbed to eighth in the Premier League table with wins over Arsenal and Nottingham Forest and bidding for three consecutive league wins for the first time since September 2023.

Ahead of the visit of a West Ham side six points and six places worse off than them in the Premier League table, let’s look at that mixed Magpies’ Monday night record.

Newcastle 2-0 Arsenal: May 16, 2022

In Newcastle’s final home game of the 2021/22 season, they faced an Arsenal side chasing a place in the league’s top four. The Amazon Prime cameras were watching as January signing Bruno Guimaraes, capped a phenomenal team performance by scoring Newcastle’s second goal. Newcastle 0-0 Leicester: May 22, 2023

The Magpies had waited over a year for a Monday night fixture with this clash also coming in their final home match of the 2022/23 season.
They faced struggling Leicester City knowing that anything but a loss would secure Champions League qualification for the first time in two decades. Newcastle keeper Nick Pope pulled off a fantastic save in stoppage time to deny Timothy Castagne which meant the match ended goalless meaning European football would be returning to Tyneside.(Image: Newcastle Chronicle)

Liverpool 4-2 Newcastle: January 1, 2024

Newcastle were in their worst form of Eddie Howe’s tenure having only won one of their previous five games before this clash. All six goals at Anfield came in a breathless second half. Liverpool were much the better side as they racked up 7.27 expected goals (the highest total on record by a team in a single Premier League match), having also missed a first half penalty. Sven Botman made things interesting when his goal added to Alexander Isak's effort brough United back into the match.
However, with the game at 3-2 Liverpool were awarded their second penalty of the game when Diogo Jota went down softly in the penalty area. Mohammed Salah made no mistake and scored the home side’s fourth goal of the match.

Chelsea 3-2 Newcastle: March 11, 2024

An injury-plagued Newcastle travelled to a ground where they have had very little success in recent times.
Both teams were battling for European qualification and similar to the game at Anfield, the Magpies were well below par and the scoreline flattered them. Cole Palmer was at his very best on this night scoring and providing in this game. Jacob Murphy scored a fantastic goal late on, but Newcastle ran out of time to find an equaliser.
