Newcastle United ready to seal €35m deal for starlet winger – Medical in Atlanta lined up

by · Sport Witness

Newcastle United are reportedly on the verge of completing a move for Victor Muñoz. Additionally, claims from Spain suggest that the Osasuna winger could undergo a medical in the United States within days.

Fresh details from Spanish television suggest there has been significant progress behind the scenes. So a move could soon be completed.

Speaking on El Chiringuito TV, journalist José Álvarez stated that Victor Muñoz is “very close” to becoming a Newcastle player. The Premier League club is now advancing negotiations after waiting for the outcome of Real Madrid’s presidential election, due to their buyback option.

According to the journalist, Newcastle believed Florentino Pérez’s project did not include a place for the 21-year-old winger in the first team. Yet they wanted clarity before pushing ahead with an agreement. Once Pérez secured victory, discussions accelerated.

Election outcome said to be key factor

Victor Muñoz came through Real Madrid’s academy system and remains closely linked to the Spanish giants. Even though he now plays for Osasuna, that connection continues.

Newcastle United appear to have identified an opportunity. Rather than waiting to see whether Real Madrid would eventually bring the winger back, the Magpies are now being presented as a realistic destination after his breakthrough season in La Liga.

José Álvarez explained that Newcastle’s decision-makers wanted certainty regarding Real Madrid’s plans before finalising any operation. The election result seems to have provided that reassurance.

That aspect is particularly interesting. It suggests the English club’s interest has been active for some time, rather than being a sudden move at the start of the summer window.

From Barcelona prospect to Osasuna breakthrough

Victor Muñoz’s path to this point has been anything but conventional. The winger actually began his youth career in Barcelona’s academy system before moving to CF Damm. Later he joined Real Madrid’s youth setup in 2021.

He progressed through the ranks in Madrid, featuring for the club’s Under-19 side, Real Madrid C and Castilla. Then he earned a permanent move to Osasuna last summer.

Osasuna paid €5m (£4.3m) for the attacker, while Real Madrid retained a buyback option and a percentage of any future sale.

Last season proved to be an important step in his development. The 21-year-old made 36 appearances across all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing five assists during his first campaign as an Osasuna player.

Those numbers helped establish Victor Muñoz as one of the more productive young Spanish wide players outside the country’s traditional group of established stars.

They also explain why Newcastle United appear willing to invest heavily just a year after Osasuna signed him.

€35m deal structure and US medical

Álvarez claims the transfer is expected to be completed for around €35m (£29.8m). Additionally, there could be €5m (£4.3m) in bonuses.

He added that the overall figure effectively matches the player’s release clause. However, the payment structure would be arranged differently through negotiations between the clubs.

According to the report, Victor Muñoz is expected to undergo medical tests in Atlanta. Newcastle United’s travelling medical staff would meet him in the coming days in an effort to finalise the transfer.

Although some details are still said to remain unresolved, the operation is described as being very advanced.

Álvarez also described the winger as a potential replacement for Anthony Gordon. However, that appears to be his assessment of Newcastle’s squad planning rather than a direct indication that Gordon is on the verge of leaving St James’ Park.

If the claims from Spain prove accurate, the next few days could bring the final steps towards securing one of Spain’s most highly-rated young attacking players.

The deal would also represent a remarkable piece of business for Osasuna, who paid just €5m (£4.3m) for Muñoz a year ago. In addition, Real Madrid would also benefit through the clauses they retained when selling him.
