Newcastle United encouraged to secure €45m target – FFP and World Cup dictating sale

Frosinone, Italy 16 August, 2025: Manu kone of Roma greets supporters at end of the friendly test-match between AS Roma and Neom FC (France) at the Benito Stirpe Stadium .

Manu Kone has been a standout for Roma this season but there is the rising possibility of a move to Newcastle United.

The 24-year-old hasn’t played in Serie A since the middle of March due to a hamstring injury. His absence has been felt at Roma.

They are currently out of the Champions League spots and clearly miss a midfield presence that sets the tempo for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.

The Frenchman has played 34 times in all competitions regardless. He’s impressed with his ability to beat the press in midfield and carry the ball forward.

Some months ago, Sport Witness covered Manchester United’s interest in Kone. There was a growing sentiment that the France international will depart Roma, who faced approaches from Inter Milan last summer.

Now, it is Newcastle United who are in the picture to sign him.

FFP worries can spark sale

Il Messaggero today report that Kone is the likeliest candidate to leave Roma due to their ongoing FFP worries. The Giallorossi have to make capital gains of €80m by June 30th.

The 24-year-old is valued at €45m right now and his exit will grant Roma a capital gain of €35m.

Inter remain keen but Newcastle United can also meet the €45m valuation in the summer. If an offer of that amount arrives, Roma will be forced to sit down and evaluate it. The player too will consider a transfer, regardless of whether the Magpies come forward before or after the World Cup.

Roma would ideally want to wait to see how he performs at the tournament later this year. This can increase his value, however, FFP reasons mean they will have no choice if clubs come knocking by June 30th.

Our take: Deal there to be done

It feels like Roma, on a weekly basis, are making it clear that they need money. Some weeks ago, Evan Ndicka’s future was also spoken about in the same tone and he can also leave in the summer.

Because of that, Newcastle United should continue to keep tabs on Kone and there can be every opportunity to sign him. Inter usually prefer initial loans but the Magpies will likely have more financial muscle in the race.

They can lose a midfielder in the summer and money earned from that can be used to bring in Kone. He is at the right age, has a dynamic profile and can still get better.
