Strategy shift puts Wolves player in focus – Transfer now priority for giants

by · Sport Witness

Wolverhampton Wanderers are facing a key decision on João Gomes this summer, with fresh reports from Brazil now suggesting a clearer direction on his future.

The 25-year-old midfielder has already been part of discussions around a potential sale, especially with Napoli links.

That context becomes even more relevant after Wolves dropped out of the Premier League and began planning a squad rebuild. As we recently covered, Gomes is part of the list of players that are on sale.

Now, according to RTI Esporte, there is a new development from Spain. Atlético Madrid have shifted their transfer strategy and made João Gomes a priority target.

Atlético Madrid change direction

The Brazilian outlet explains that Atlético had been in advanced talks for Atalanta’s Ederson. However, those negotiations stalled. As a result, Diego Simeone’s side moved quickly towards João Gomes.

Internally, the midfielder is seen as an ideal fit for Atlético’s style. His intensity, defensive output and work rate are all highlighted as key traits. Those qualities align closely with what Simeone typically demands.

That shift in focus places Wolves in a familiar position. Interest in João Gomes has been building, and this is now a more concrete step from a Champions League-level club.

Price set as Wolves prepare changes

João Gomes remains under contract until June 2028. That gives Wolves strong control over the situation.

However, the club are open to a sale. The Brazilian report indicate they want around £40m (€46m) to let him leave. It contradicts claims from Italy that valued him at €70m (£60m).

Of course, Wolves are entering a period of restructuring after relegation. Selling key assets is part of that plan, and João Gomes is one of their most valuable players.

There is also a clear financial upside. As previously noted, Wolves signed him from Flamengo in January 2023 for around €18.7m (£16.2m), potentially rising to €20m (£17.4m). A £40m sale would represent a strong profit.

What happens next

João Gomes now sits at the centre of Wolves’ summer plans. Atlético Madrid’s interest looks serious, especially after their change of strategy. Meanwhile, Wolves have already set their price and appear ready to listen.

As we have been following closely, Napoli also is in the picture alongside Manchester United and Crystal Palace.

The next step will likely depend on whether Atlético meet that valuation. If they do, Wolves may see this as the right moment to sell and accelerate their rebuild.

From the English club’s perspective, this is less about replacing a player and more about reshaping the squad. João Gomes could be one of the deals that defines their summer.
