“I love this club very much” – Tottenham player quizzed about future, says win ‘shut a lot of mouths’

Cristian Romero starred in Tottenham Hotspur’s win over Manchester United in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

Spurs struggled in the Premier League as they picked up 38 points from 37 games and are in the 17th spot. The success in Europe’s second tier competition helps them qualify for the Champions League and to finish the season on a positive note.

The Argentine international spoke to the media from his country after Tottenham beat the Red Devils and TyC Sports have relayed his comments.

Romero used the Europa League final win to send a message to Tottenham’s ‘detractors’.

“It was a tough season for us. We deserved to end like this because no one knows what goes on behind closed doors at the club. Beyond everything, we always put our best foot forward. We had too many injuries and there was always bad talk about this team and the manager, and today we shut a lot of mouths,” he said.

The centre-back has a contract until 2027 but has been linked with a move away from the north London club in the summer window.

Over the past few weeks, claims from Spain have talked about Atlético Madrid’s interest. Los Rojiblancos are prioritising the 27-year-old’s signing to strengthen their defence next season.

The defender spoke to ESPN in Argentine, who asked him about his future at Tottenham beyond this season.

Responding to that, Romero explained: “I can’t stop the things that are said outside the club, nor can I be constantly clarifying them.

“I always gave my all to this shirt, and here at the club, they show me that they love me very much. I love this club very much. I achieved a huge goal because Tottenham haven’t lifted a trophy in many years.”

In the post-match celebration, the World Cup winner was seen without a medal around his shoulder.

“They ran out of medals; they couldn’t give it to me, ha. But the most important thing is that we are European champions, and my name will be etched in the club’s history,” he added.
