“Drama sells papers” – Player defends Ange Postecoglou after Tottenham triumph, calls press ‘bunch of vultures’
by Kaustubh Pandey · Sport WitnessTottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou’s Europa League win on Wednesday somewhat comes as a slap in the face of the UK press.
The Australian was heavily pressured by reporters and hours before the game, and was also indirectly compared to a ‘clown’ in the pre-match press conference.
Now that the Tottenham manager has at least partly redeemed himself by ending the club’s 17-year-old trophy drought, support for him is arriving from ex-players.
Trent Sainsbury played under Postecoglou during their time together with the Australian national team and he’s described the press as a ‘bunch of vultures’.
He told Tuttomercatoweb: “The English press is harsh on everyone. When you get to the Premier League, there are always smiles and the press wishes you good luck.
“When things start to go wrong, the journalists themselves become like a bunch of vultures feeding on a dead carcass. In the end, drama sells papers.”
When asked about his former manager’s achievement at Tottenham, the defender said:
“I couldn’t be happier for Ange and the Australian Spurs supporters. What they have achieved is truly extraordinary. Not only because it is a European trophy, but because Ange and his team have succeeded with Spurs, something no one would have ever believed possible. The criticism and sceptics make their success even more beautiful and sweet.”
Soon enough when the dust from the silverware win settles, Tottenham will have a decision to make about Postecoglou and his future as manager.
Spurs are still rooted to 17th in the Premier League and despite the trophy win it isn’t a good look for the manager.
It is fair to say that a decision will be made after considerable thought, but considering how Postecoglou has achieved something which hasn’t been achieved in 17 years, giving him another chance may be a wise move from Daniel Levy.
