Newcastle United now on verge of completing signing after played snubbed Sunderland

by · Sport Witness

Newcastle United have made concrete advances to sign CA Osasuna’s Victor Muñoz, months after Sunderland missed out on him.

In the winter market, Sunderland showed serious interest and made multiple bids to sign him.

The move didn’t go through and Newcastle United could bring the winger to the Premier League this summer.

Earlier today, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain that the Magpies are leading the race to sign the Spain international. The La Liga side insisted there’s no official bid on the table yet.

Newcastle closing in after Sunderland snub

Friday’s edition of AS mentions the Black Cats’ failed January attempt when covering the latest on the Tyneside club.

Eddie Howe’s side are closing in on a deal for Victor Muñoz for €35m plus €5m bonuses. The total value is €40m, which is his current clause.

However, AS state: ‘[The] new structure also allows for a more favourable tax treatment, as simply paying the clause directly is less advantageous.’

The winger’s old club, Real Madrid, retain 50% of his rights and have a buyback clause. His move to St. James’ Park now depends on the Spanish giants’ final approval.

Diario de Navarra claim his move to Newcastle United has accelerated in the ‘last few hours’.

CA Osasuna received a verbal offer of €30m [AS state €35m plus bonuses]. Although this is less than his €40m clause, the negotiations are progressing.

Muñoz became part of Niagara Sports Company in April, and the agency is now leading the negotiations.

He has given his approval to the English club after receiving a ‘very attractive offer’. The player’s stance has now changed after he rejected Sunderland in January to continue at the La Liga side.

Real Madrid decision awaited

CA Osasuna are expecting the Magpies to make a formal offer soon.

At that point, the former have to take this to Real Madrid, who have to decide whether to exercise the buyback clause.

If Los Blancos decide not to trigger this clause, then he can join Newcastle United.

The newspaper state: ‘The negotiation involves key aspects such as the percentage of the player’s transfer fee, currently divided equally between Osasuna and Real Madrid, as well as percentages of revenue from future sales important fine print given the player’s enormous potential. These are crucial hours to resolve the matter…’

Contract, value and stats

Victor Muñoz finished this season with seven goals and five assists from 36 matches.

With a contract until 2030, he’s valued at €30m by Transfermarkt.

Newcastle United want him to replace Anthony Gordon, who joined Barcelona in May.
