Celtic wanting midfielder is justified – Transfer target is a rising star
by Kaustubh Pandey · Sport WitnessAs Venezia’s Issa Doumbia continues to grow, Celtic remain in the hunt for the midfielder.
In January, Sport Witness covered the Hoops’ interest in the Italian. They had been scouting Doumbia throughout the campaign and were, at that point, facing competition from Udinese, Cremonese and Southampton.
The Saints had actually made a formal approach for the talent in the summer of 2025. The move was made too late in the window and this played a part in the deal never materialising.
Since then, Doumbia has become one of the most sought-after players in Serie B. He has seven league goals this season, assisting five times, playing a big role in keeping Venezia at the top of the table.
With promotion to Serie A just a step away, Celtic are still interested in Doumbia.
Other clubs joining race
Gazzetta dello Sport today describe the 22-year-old as a treasure that Venezia have on their hands. They paid only €1m to sign him from AlbinoLeffe in 2024 and he is now worth as much as €15m.
This view is shared by manager Giovanni Stroppa, who saw Doumbia score a crucial goal in their win over Empoli at the weekend.
The report reveals Celtic and Southampton are now joined by a host of other clubs in the chase for the talent. Club Brugge and Espanyol are also keen.
Major Serie A sides are now monitoring his development, and Portuguese giants Sporting are taking a look.
Venezia are yet to make a decision on his future. Promotion to the top-flight brings a lot of challenges with it but a sale can come down to the money on offer from clubs.
Our take: Celtic’s task is getting difficult
With every passing week, the line of suitors continues to grow for the Italy U21s player. That is no surprise but it comes as an issue for Celtic.
The Hoops may have to shell out a record fee for Issa Doumbia. Major Italian clubs, Sporting and even Club Brugge can offer European football and more eyeballs.
Doumbia’s entourage at StarAssist are more active in Italy and France.
