“That’s nonsense” – Liverpool told to stop being “so silly” over Arne Slot
by Sean Lunt · Sport WitnessArne Slot’s job being under scrutiny at Liverpool after their title-winning season last year is “nonsense”.
That’s according to analyst René van der Gijp, via Soccer News. He’s tired of hearing that Slot could be sacked at Liverpool.
The Dutchman has found himself firmly in the spotlight this season as Liverpool have failed to defend their title thus far. They appeared to be on course for another strong season after a winning start to the campaign, winning their first five matches.
That saw them topping the table and was one of the best starts in the history of the league. However, their form has fallen off a cliff since then.
In the ten Premier League game that followed, they’ve only won two, drawn two and lost six. That’s included losses to the likes of Nottingham Forest and the 3-3 draw with Leeds last weekend. Both of those sides are currently fighting against relegation.
They currently sit 10th in the table, 10 points Arsenal in 1st. Their run of nine defeats in 12 games in all competitions is their worst 12 game sequence since the 1953-54 season. Liverpool were relegated that year, the last time they dropped out of the top flight.
Sections of the Liverpool fanbase are calling for Slot to go, particularly now amid the fall out with Mohamed Salah. Van der Gijp, though, believes such calls are nonsense.
“You take Slot as Liverpool and discover he’s the best manager you’ve ever seen in 100 years. You’d suddenly get rid of him now. That’s nonsense, man. Keep the man, don’t be so silly,” he said.
“You can put Mo Salah aside, no matter how good he is. It’s always a problem when a star’s reputation is tarnished
“He had a fantastic season last year. He’s just unlucky to have bought five players, none of which are of any use to him at the moment.”
