by Ali Shutler · NMEThe upcoming Call Of Duty live-action adaptation will take place in the world of Modern Warfare.
The original Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare game was released in 2007 and two sequels followed in 2009 and 2011. The series was rebooted with 2019’s Modern Warfare which spawned three more sequels, including this year’s Modern Warfare 4.
Over the weekend Peter Berg, co-writer and director of the upcoming Call Of Duty movie confirmed that the film will take place in the Modern Warfare universe (via Variety). Specific plot details are being kept under wraps, but the Modern Warfare games are typically set around modern conflicts with a focus on realism.
In a new teaser shared earlier this year, Berg said both he and the film’s writer Taylor Sheridan are “deeply connected to the special ops community,” and will be prioritising “authenticity” with the film, but are also looking at the group of elite soldiers “on a human level.” They also promised to bring “amazing scale” to the movie adaptation of the blockbuster gaming franchise.
The Call Of Duty movie is due to hit cinemas June 20, 2028. According to a joint statement from Activision and Paramount, the live-action Call Of Duty film is “designed to thrill its massive global fan base by delivering on the hallmarks of what fans love about the iconic series” but will also “expand the franchise to entirely new audiences.”
“Both companies are committed to honouring the brand’s rich narrative and distinctive style, promising an authentic and exciting experience for longtime fans and newcomers alike.”
