Pete Wicks says he "definitely" has a fear of commitment as rumours continue to swirl over his relationship status with Maura Higgins.

The Strictly star has been romantically linked with the Longford beauty for a couple of months now, with neither party keen to confirm or deny reports that they are an item.

While Pete admits that he and Maura are close knit and gushed that he is "very proud" of her, the reality star confessed he fears commitment.

"I've not been in a relationship for most of my life. I've definitely got a fear of commitment," he said.

"It's the standard cliché of abandonment, fear of people living. That probably has been driven by different things that happened in my life. It probably doesn't mean I will be on my own forever, but I can't say at this stage whether I will or won't be."

When quizzed on Maura, the former TOWIE star remained coy, but says they have been friends for a long time and is very supportive of her.

Pete told the Daily Mail magazine: "People assume we've only known each other for six months, but it's actually six years. We met at an event, and have been friends ever since.

"We're very close. We've got the same sense of humour. She's incredibly funny and lovely, and was very supportive when I was on Strictly. And I supported her when she was in the jungle. I'm very, very proud of her."

At 37, Pete is often asked if he is ready to settle down. The reality star says he one day wants to have a "fairytale ending" but needs to work on himself before that can happen.

He continued: "Listen, I would love to have kids and do all that sort of thing. Who doesn't want the fairtyale ending? But I think I still need to work some stuff out for myself.

"I've been doing that for the past few years, which has been good for me. It's that old thing of before you can lose someone else, you have to love yourself first."

Pete's admission comes after Maura was grilled on relationship rumours during an appearance on Loose Women last week.

When panellist Frankie Bridge asked if there was any truth to the speculation, the I'm A Celebrity star replied: "We spend time together, we get on very well, our personalities are very very similar and he's a great person but there's actually nothing to tell. There's really not though, no one believes me, there's not!"
