Katie Taylor reconciles with dad Pete as they start training together again
by Shauna Bannon Ward · RSVP LiveKatie Taylor has reconciled with her father Pete and they have started training together again.
The Olympic gold medallist’s first ever trainer was her father, who owned his own boxing gym, however, they went their separate ways in 2016.
However, ahead of her trilogy fight with Amanda Serrano in New York’s Madison Square Garden, the pair began working together again.
Katie explained that it was very important for her to begin training with Pete again.
In a new Netflix documentary, she said: “To be back training with him is huge for me, you can't mention my story without mentioning my dad.
“We know each other very well at this stage. I know what I need to work on, I know what I need to do. My motivation is still the same… as it always is. Even more so.”
Her manager Brian Peters said: “It takes some doing just to get that relationship back, that takes work but it's beautiful to see it. Katie uses a great word, restoration.”
It’s understood that Ross Enamait is still her head coach, but Katie’s father has an input in her training.
Pete shared: “This is a happy place for us. We're just so comfortable in here together.
“Katie's my child and I'm her dad. Even though Ross has been with her for the last ten years, I still know Katie better than anybody else.
“When you have two people that is interested in one person, and the conversations are always going to be constructive, two is better than one.
“No matter what, she'll always find a way of winning. No disrespect to Amanda Serrano, I don't think she has the tools to beat Katie.
“Katie's got the abilities to adapt all the time. Obviously, Amanda's going to adapt as well. You've seen the best of Amanda Serrano in both fights in all fairness.
“I still don't think you've seen the best of Katie Taylor and I think in this fight you're going to see the best Katie Taylor and it's going to shock Amanda Serrano.”
After winning a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics, Katie shared that she and her father “parted ways” during a year of “turmoil” for her.
She previously told Ryan Tubridy on The Late Late Show that 2016 was a hard year for her.
“I would describe that whole year as turmoil, there was a lot of turmoil within our family relationships and it is no secret at this stage that myself and my dad parted ways throughout that year and my whole training regime was turned upside down.
"I was going from club to club just trying to get spars here and there. I was sleeping in the car in between sessions and I wasn't eating properly.
"But I still genuinely believed I was going to win gold [at the 2016 Olympics] and I believed that was my destiny.
"When things don't pan out the way you hoped and dreamed, you can't underestimate how heart-breaking that is. As an athlete with my mentality, winning is everything and that was easily the lowest point of my career."
