Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has tragically passed away in Spain just days following his wedding. The Portugal international and his sibling Andre Silva were involved in a fatal car accident on Thursday.
Just hours before the tragedy, the 28 year old shared what has now become a poignant video of his wedding day on Instagram, capturing the lead-up to the ceremony and the joyful festivities. Jota, who tied the knot with his long-term partner Rute Cardoso 11 days prior, accompanied the post with the caption: "A day we will never forget," alongside a love heart emoji.
The couple had been together since 2012, with Jota popping the question to her in July 2022 against the backdrop of a picturesque lakeside. Together, they were parents to three children.
In the days leading up to his untimely death, both Rute and Jota posted snapshots of their nuptials, which were held in a majestic church last month. She expressed her joy with the words: "Yes to forever. My dream came true."
Her spouse echoed the sentiment, stating: "I'm the lucky one.", reports the Mirror.
For the occasion, Rute was adorned in a white gown while Jota donned a dapper navy suit. They shared images of themselves at the altar with their offspring and as they exited the church, clutching a bouquet of flowers.
Their wedding day Instagram post garnered over 190,000 likes and received upwards of 1,000 comments. His final upload – the touching wedding video montage – has attracted over 62,000 likes thus far.
Jota was killed in a crash in the Spanish province of Zamora, an incident that also claimed the life of his brother Andre. At 26 years old, Andre was a professional footballer for Penafiel, a club competing in Portugal's second division.
The BBC has reported that Jota and his brother tragically lost their lives around 00:30 local time on Thursday. Their Lamborghini reportedly veered off the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle, subsequently catching fire.
Tributes have been flooding in for the much-loved forward. His club released a statement saying: "Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. His nation's football federation also issued a statement, stating: "The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated.
