You can now enable Ubuntu Pro from the OS welcome wizard
by by Joey Sneddon · omg! ubuntu · JoinUbuntu 26.04 LTS makes it easier to enable Ubuntu Pro, Canonical’s opt-in (but free for home users) subscription that extends security update to more packages in the wider Ubuntu repos, straight after installation.
An Enable Ubuntu Pro step has been added to the distro’s Welcome tool (package namegnome-initial-setup, with Ubuntu-specific modifications). This tool pops up to new users the first time they login after installing the OS.
The first step on the Welcome tool in Ubuntu 26.04 LTS offers to help you enrol your system in Ubuntu Pro:
The flow is presented simply: you either select ‘Enable Ubuntu Pro’, or you can choose to ‘Skip for now’ (you can manage Ubuntu Pro from the desktop Security Center app in 26.04, should you want to opt-in or configure which updates/benefits you get).
If decide to enable Ubuntu Pro right there, the next slide gives you options to do so
This feels slightly less-guided that it could be. I don’t imagine everyone new to Ubuntu knows what an Ubuntu One account is, much less has one. A small explanation of the benefits, where to signup and what it entails would be useful.
Still, for those who do know, the provided options make sense.
The attach code presented can be selected and copied to the clipboard, and pasted in the relevant field on the ubuntu.com/pro/attach webpage (once you’re logged in). To save typing it out, a clickable link is listed, and this opens in the default web browser.
An option to add the token manually is also presented, for those who have a token provided to them from their team/manager.
The usual post-install tweaks, like turning on location services, choosing to share system report and crash reports with developers (the ‘telemetry’ trigger word) and setting a UI accent colour, remain.
