BleachBit 6.0.6 released with fixes for admin cleaning on Linux
by by Joey Sneddon · omg! ubuntu · JoinBleachBit, the free, open-source and cross-platform system cleaning utility has a new maintenance release out – with support for Ubuntu 26.10.
BleachBit 6.0.6 introduces cleaners for the Helium browser and Docker Desktop (including its AI assistant).
This update also boosts app startup times, and makes deep scan, file deletion and file wiping faster, the latter now wiping in 512 KiB blocks rather than 4 KiB.
A few preexisting cleaners now extend to more areas.
Stale crash reports, GPU caches and session files for Claude, VS Code-based editors and Chromium can (optionally; variously) be expunged with this update. LibreWolf cleaning now covers .deb and Flatpak versions of the browser on Linux.
For Ubuntu users, BleachBit 6.0.6 is able to detect and remove more snap revisions (you can remove revisions manually if you run low on space, which if you install Myna on Ubuntu and try out various AI models, the revision backups add up).
It also brings an official .deb installer for Ubuntu 26.10, which is welcome.
Elsewhere on Linux, issues running BleachBit as Administrator (a separate mode for cleaning system files) on RedHat were resolved by using pkexec. This is also recommended if using admin mode on Ubuntu with a .deb-installed build.
Windows users gain plenty of plenty of platform-specific fixes, and a new(ish) logo, as the familiar BleachBit icon is now placed on a square. An SVG icon is shipped for Linux and BSD too.
Work on the BleachBit macOS port continues. This update hooks up cleaners for Adobe Acrobat, Claude, Devin, GIMP, Google Earth, TeamViewer, Visual Studio Code, VLC, Zen browser and Zoom.
You can download BleachBit from the official website, which has installers and runtimes for all major operating system, including .deb and AppImage options for Ubuntu.
