LONDON — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer took direct aim at Donald Trump Friday after the U.S. president suggested fellow NATO members stayed away from the frontlines during the war in Afghanistan.

In his latest swipe at European allies, the U.S. president told Fox News he wasn’t “sure” the alliance would “be there if we ever needed them.” And he added: “We’ve never needed them. They’ll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan … and they did, they stayed a little back, a little off the front lines.”

Starmer told reporters Friday evening that Trump’s remarks were “insulting and frankly appalling” — and suggested he should apologize. “If I had misspoken in that way or said those words I would certainly apologize,” he said.
